PART 1: Mikaela at ARSGEM
Briefly introduce yourself.
My name is Mikaela Nicholson. I work at the ARSGEM Ottawa branch as a project manager administrator. I have been with ARSGEM for a little over 2 years now.
What are some unique parts of your role at ARSGEM?
Our Ottawa office may be small in size but definitely has a big character! My role encompasses more than just administrative tasks with multiple opportunities I would not have had elsewhere. In addition to answering calls and emails, I actively participate in team meetings, fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment. I also have the opportunity to attend industry events in the Ottawa area and work closely with our Branch Manager, Ron Leblanc, on business development initiatives.

What are your favourite parts of your role and why?
I find immense satisfaction in building strong relationships with my coworkers. The positive team dynamic that results from these connections makes coming to work a truly enjoyable experience. I believe that open communication and genuine care for colleagues are essential for a successful and fulfilling work environment. I also cherish the opportunity to attend industry events with my team, allowing us to build valuable relationships with clients and colleagues.
How do you measure success for your role?
I define success in my role by my ability to maintain consistent organization and stay current with all ongoing projects. While daily challenges are inevitable, I prioritize my tasks by creating a daily to-do list and consistently checking off completed items. Successfully managing my inbox, updating Dash, and completing my daily checklist are key indicators of a successful day.
How do you foster collaboration and teamwork within your team?
Teamwork is paramount at the ARSGEM Ottawa branch. I prioritize weekly team meetings as a crucial platform for collaboration and communication. These meetings provide a valuable opportunity for team members to share updates, discuss challenges, and collaborate on solutions. I believe these meetings significantly contribute to the strong team spirit within our Ottawa office.
What are the most critical skills needed to excel in your position?
Success in this role hinges on three key skills: organization, attention to detail, and effective communication. These skills are crucial for accurately inputting job updates, prioritizing daily tasks, and maintaining open lines of communication with project managers and coordinators.
PART 2 • Mikaela's Philosophy

What is your personal philosophy on success?
My definition of success goes beyond external metrics. It's about living authentically, aligning my actions with my values, and continuously striving for personal growth. This includes nurturing meaningful relationships, embracing challenges, learning from setbacks, and practicing kindness in all my interactions.
What are your core values and how do they guide your decisions?
Family, adaptability, and kindness are the cornerstones of my life. My family, both immediate and chosen, has always been my source of strength and support. Adaptability is essential in navigating the complexities of modern life, especially for mothers. And finally, I believe in the power of kindness and strive to exemplify it in all my interactions.
How do you handle challenges and setbacks?
I believe a growth mindset is key to cultivating resilience. When faced with challenges, I strive to view them as opportunities for learning and growth. While it's natural to feel anxious, I acknowledge these emotions and strive to maintain a positive outlook. By analyzing the situation, seeking support, and focusing on developing new skills, I can overcome any obstacle.
What was your first job and what do you remember most about it?
At 16, I landed my first part-time job at GoodLife Fitness. It was a fantastic experience. I loved the gym's vibrant atmosphere and the positive energy that permeated the space. The gym became a significant part of my life, not only as an employee but also as a member. I made many lifelong friends during my time there.
